We, the Foreign Ministers of MIKTA members (Mexico, Indonesia, Republic of Korea, Türkiye and Australia), gathered in New York, on Monday 21 September 2026 for the 30th MIKTA Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and adopted the following MIKTA Vision Statement.
A stable, prosperous and secure world depends on a strong, effective and inclusive multilateral system. Respect for sovereignty and international law helps prevent conflict and facilitates free and open trade. Together, these principles form the foundation for international peace and security, sustainable development and human rights. In an increasingly interconnected and complex global environment, multilateral cooperation remains essential to addressing shared challenges and advancing our collective prosperity.
Yet the multilateral system faces serious challenges and gaps in implementation. It has not kept pace with the scale or urgency of today’s challenges, including geopolitical tensions and strategic competition, armed conflict and protracted humanitarian crises. Rapid economic and technological transformations create opportunities but also challenges, including disparities in sustainable development and technological advancement. Beyond reform, further efforts are needed to ensure our multilateral system can better address present and future challenges.
As the international community needs new approaches to protect the institutions and rules on which we all rely, MIKTA members as diverse middle powers spanning different regions and cultures, can make a significant contribution by bridging perspectives, building consensus and mobilising practical cooperation across regions and institutions. MIKTA members will work together to strengthen global governance, support an open and inclusive international order, and contribute solutions to shared challenges that no country can address alone. Our partnership is underpinned by our enduring cultural and people‑to‑people links.
MIKTA will act with purpose, through practical, inclusive cooperation, to advance targeted, pragmatic and creative solutions where they matter most, including:
- upholding international law and protecting the rules, norms and standards of the multilateral system with an efficient and effective United Nations as its core
- advancing the vision of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the implementation of its Sustainable Development Goals, including financing for an ambitious and fit for purpose post-2030 agenda
- advancing ambitious climate action across adaptation, mitigation and means of implementation to accelerate the effective implementation of the Paris Agreement; and promoting the conservation and sustainable use of the ocean and seas
- as open, outward-looking economies and members of the G20 and World Trade Organization, strengthening an open, rules-based, inclusive, transparent and predictable multilateral trading system with a comprehensively reformed WTO at its core.
Together we can help address common global challenges and shape an international system based on collective adherence to norms and principles for present and future generations.
