Consul-General in Guangzhou

  • Media release
29 March 2026

Today I announce the appointment of Ms Maree Ringland as Australia’s next Consul-General in Guangzhou.

Southern China plays a key role in our substantial economic relationship with China, Australia’s largest trading partner. It is a major market for Australian resources and energy, and an important consumer market for high-quality Australian goods and services.

Australia has longstanding ties with this growing region, which include strong economic connections and extensive community and cultural links.

Located in one of China's most populous provinces, the Consulate-General supports opportunities for Australian business and industry throughout southern China.

The Consulate-General in Guangzhou is responsible for advancing Australia’s interests in Guangdong, Fujian, Hunan, Guangxi and Hainan.

Ms Ringland is a career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and was most recently Australia's Ambassador to Peru and Bolivia. She has also previously served overseas in China and Chile.

I thank outgoing Consul-General Timothy Kendall for his contributions to advancing Australia’s interests in Guangzhou since 2024.
