Today I announce the appointment of Ms Sarah Roberts as Australia's next Ambassador to Argentina, with non-resident accreditation to Paraguay and Uruguay.
Australia and Argentina have a growing trade and investment relationship, underpinned by bilateral trade in commodities and the increasing involvement of Australian companies in the development of Argentina's mining sector.
Australia enjoys a long-term partnership with Uruguay, including supplying the high-speed passenger ferries that provide a vital link between Uruguay and Argentina.
Australia works closely with Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay in the multilateral system to promote shared values and priorities, including through the United Nations and World Trade Organization, as well as the Cairns Group of agricultural fair-trading countries.
Australia also works closely with Argentina and Uruguay through the Antarctic Treaty system and with Argentina through the G20.
Ms Roberts is a senior career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and was most recently Assistant Secretary, Arms Control and Counter-Proliferation Branch.
She has previously served overseas in Thailand, Fiji and Brazil.
I thank outgoing Ambassador Dr Simon Twisk for his contributions to advancing Australia's interests in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay since 2023.
