Australia will provide a further $10 million in humanitarian assistance to improve disaster response in our region and to support displaced women and girls from Myanmar.
The Indo-Pacific region is highly vulnerable to disasters including earthquakes, flooding, droughts, typhoons and volcanic eruptions.
In partnership with the Australian Red Cross and the Australian Humanitarian Partnership, Australia will provide $6 million to help local Non-Government Organisations and Red Cross National Societies to access rapid support for disaster response and recovery in the region.
Australia will also provide $4 million to the United Nations Population Fund for support and services to women and girls from Myanmar. The funding will assist UNFPA to deliver maternal, child and newborn care, and deliver gender-based violence, mental health and psychosocial support services.
Australia’s assistance will be delivered through local systems and partners to ensure local ownership and long-term sustainability.
In these uncertain times, Australia is stepping up our support to our partners to build capability and improve the lives of those in our region. By building resilience, we also help keep Australians safe.
This additional funding reflects not only our dedication to humanitarian principles but our national interest in a peaceful, stable and prosperous region.
