Diplomatic Corps visit to Tasmania

From 28 to 30 April, I will showcase Tasmanian business, tourism and culture when I host around 80 Canberra-based heads of foreign diplomatic missions in Tasmania.

The three-day visit will give Ambassadors and High Commissioners to Australia an insight into the wealth and dynamism of Tasmania's economy, so they can better inform their home countries of investment and trade opportunities.

Tasmania's economy is growing, with high labour market confidence and a positive economic outlook. International visitor numbers are up by 20 per cent, boosting tourism in the state. Premier Will Hodgman will brief the diplomats on Tasmania's economic achievements and prospects for further growth.

The diplomats will receive briefings from a number of innovative Tasmanian businesses, including INCAT and Life Raft Systems; Tasmanian Alkaloids, which through its production of medicinal opiates leverages Tasmania's position as a leading producer of poppies; and fisheries and aquaculture company Petuna. The program also includes a Tasmanian Showcase trade fair featuring local producers.

Honorary Tasmanian Antarctic Ambassador Sir Guy Green and Antarctic Division Director Dr Nick Gale will speak on Tasmania's position as the Gateway to Antarctica. The diplomats will meet scientists and policy specialists representing the world's largest concentration of Antarctic expertise. A visit to the Australian Maritime College will further highlight Tasmania's international education and research linkages.

The group will also visit Launceston's Cataract Gorge and receive a briefing promoting Tasmania's distinctive wilderness.

The Governor of Tasmania, Her Excellency Professor the Honourable Kate Warner AM, and Mr Richard Warner, will host a formal reception.
