Mexico, Indonesia, Korea, Turkey and Australia to meet

Economic development will be the key area of discussion when I meet with my Foreign Minister counterparts from Mexico, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea and Turkey in Mexico City today.

Following our productive meeting in New York in late September 2013, this meeting of our five nations will focus on areas of shared interest including trade and economic cooperation, governance and development.

We are all significant economies and regional powers, and we have an increasingly prominent role internationally. I am pleased to have the opportunity to further strengthen cooperation and bilateral ties between the five nations.

During my visit to Mexico, I will also lead Australia's delegation to the First High-Level Meeting of the Global Partnership for Effective Development Cooperation (GPEDC). This meeting will bring together world leaders, senior ministers, and representatives from the private sector, international organisations and civil society.

We will discuss the importance of working together to ensure development is effective, including by focusing on results, the economic empowerment of women, the private sector, and opening opportunities for developing countries to participate more fully in trade.

Drawing on our work as Chair of the G20 in 2014, I will share with the GPEDC the G20's work to help developing countries tackle international tax evasion and avoidance. Boosting tax collection, stemming illicit financial flows and strengthening policies to manage public expenditure, are key to ensuring that developing countries can raise sufficient domestic resources for development.

During my visit to Mexico I will also meet with key government and business leaders to pursue the government's economic diplomacy agenda, by boosting trade and investment links with Mexico.
