Sanctions in support of Ukraine commence

Today financial sanctions and travel bans commenced against 50 persons and 11 entities that have been instrumental in the Russian threat to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

It is now an offence to use or deal with the assets, or to make any kind of asset available to the listed individuals and entities. The penalties for contravening these laws are severe.

The names of the designated persons and entities are listed in the Autonomous Sanctions (Designated Persons and Entities and Declared Persons – Ukraine) List 2014 and are published in the DFAT Consolidated List, which contains the details of all persons and entities that are subject to targeted financial sanctions or travel bans under Australian sanctions laws.

I am deeply concerned that unrest is continuing in eastern Ukraine and these sanctions re-affirm Australia's commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

It is crucial that armed groups lay down their weapons and bring an immediate halt to the violence in eastern Ukraine. I urge these groups to engage in peaceful negotiations, in line with President Poroshenko's offer of a truce.
