Situation in Yemen

The Australian Government is deeply concerned about the deteriorating security situation in Yemen and the Houthi Shia militia taking control of the capital Sana'a.

Australia welcomes the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2201 and its demand for the Houthis to engage in good faith in the UN-brokered negotiations, safely release President Hadi and Prime Minister Bahah, and to withdraw their forces from government institutions.

Australia also supports the Resolution's call for all parties to cease armed hostilities and to continue the political transition process.

I discussed Australia's concern about the situation in Yemen during my meeting with United Arab Emirates Foreign Minister His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Tuesday in Canberra.

Senior DFAT officials also discussed the Yemen crisis with Gulf Cooperation Council officials on 17 February in Canberra.

In face of the deteriorating security situation in Yemen, I strongly urge Australians in Yemen to heed Smartraveller advice and to depart the country immediately.

Australia does not have an embassy in Yemen. The Australian Government will not be able to evacuate any Australians who choose to remain in Yemen despite our longstanding advice to leave. Due to security concerns, Australian officials have been instructed not to travel to Yemen until further notice.
