US decision on Iran nuclear deal

  • Media release

Australia is disappointed that theUnited States has announced its withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan ofAction (JCPOA) that places restrictions and limits on Iran's nuclear program.

In particular, the JCPOA requires "thatunder no circumstances will Iran ever seek, develop or acquire any nuclearweapons".

The Australian Government hasconsistently said that the JCPOA should remain in force until such time that analternative agreement can be negotiated.

While the US decision createsuncertainty for the future of the JCPOA, we strongly encourage Iran to continueto abide by its provisions.

Australia shares, with members of theinternational community, concerns about elements of Iran's behaviour in the MiddleEast and urges all parties in the region to refrain from conduct whichcontributes to instability or conflict.

The United States has also announcedthat it will impose new sanctions on Iran and any affected Australianbusinesses should seek legal advice to ensure they comply with all sanctions.
