Signing of Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement in Myanmar
The Australian Government welcomes the signing of the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement by the Government of Myanmar and a number of ethnic armed organisations in Nay Pyi Taw.
The signing is an important step in efforts to end almost 70 years of conflict and marks an historic accomplishment on the path to achieving long-term security, stability and prosperity for the people of Myanmar.
It is important to ensure the agreement is implemented and for all parties to commence formal dialogue to address the root causes of the conflict.
Australia has been a strong supporter of the locally-led peace process in Myanmar, contributing more than $14 million in assistance since 2012. We will continue to support efforts to reach a sustainable peace.
While there are still risks from ongoing hostilities in some areas of the country, this agreement is a major step forward and provides a foundation for improving trust and cooperation.
Australia welcomes the Myanmar Government's commitment to allow further ethnic armed organisations to sign the agreement when they are ready.
