Australiawelcomes Malaysian political leader Anwar Ibrahim's full Royal pardon andrelease from detention today.

Wehave followed Anwar's trial and incarceration closely, and have expressedconcern to the previous Malaysian Government.

Weare pleased that the royal pardon will allow Anwar to be reunited with hisfamily in time for Ramadan and again participate fully in Malaysia's politicsand governance. Anwar has much to contribute to Malaysia.

The Australian Governmentrecognises Prime Minister Mahathir's strong emphasis on goodgovernance, the rule of law and the upholding of the Constitution.

Australia looks forward tocontinuing to work with Malaysia and its new Pakatan Harapan Government to further strengthenour partnership.
