Promoting the economic interests of Indigenous Australian businesses overseas
The Turnbull Government is pleased to announce the release of a Charter for Indigenous Australian businesses: Promoting the Economic Interests of Australian Businesses Overseas. The Charter provides practical information to help Indigenous Australian businesses optimise opportunities to engage with international markets and investors.
As a strong, stable and open economy, Australia has benefited greatly from international trade and investment, which has continued to support 26 years of uninterrupted economic growth. This has fostered a dynamic private sector and created opportunities for local businesses to grow.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has issued this Charter to ensure Indigenous businesses are connected with the high-quality services available to the wider community.
The Turnbull Government is already driving the growth of Indigenous owned businesses through the Indigenous Procurement Policy.
Since its launch in 2015, almost 1,000 Indigenous businesses have won over $594 million in Commonwealth contracts. Prior to this policy, Indigenous businesses had secured only $6.2 million in 2012-13.
The Government made an election commitment to growing the Indigenous business sector and supporting more opportunities for Indigenous entrepreneurs.
The Indigenous Business Charter is an important step to help Indigenous businesses seize the commercial opportunities of our global economy.
