Iran nuclear deal

The Australian Government welcomes the progress made towards addressing international concerns about Iran's nuclear program.

The agreement reached between the Security Council's permanent members plus Germany (the P5+1) and Iran should freeze key elements of Iran's nuclear program for 10 to 15 years. International inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will monitor Iran's nuclear program at every stage.

The success of the deal will depend on Iran's compliance with its terms and those of the parallel agreement with the IAEA. Iran must fully abide by its undertakings. We look to all parties to cooperate to ensure implementation of these agreements.

Australia is a strong supporter of international efforts to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. For example, I recently hosted the 30th plenary meeting of the Australia Group, which works to counter the diversion of legitimate trade towards weapons of mass destruction programs.

The Government will review our autonomous sanctions on Iran in light of the agreement. All UN Security Council and Australian autonomous sanctions against Iran currently remain in place.
