Bali bombings commemoration 2014

Today we commemorate with great sadness the tragic event that took place in Bali on 12 October 2002, killing 202 people, including 88 Australians, and injuring many others.

That senseless attack has had a profound and lasting effect not only on the survivors, families, and friends of the victims but also on the wider Australian community, and we continue to share a common sense of grief and outrage.

The bombings of 2002 and subsequent terrorist attacks have also brought Australia and Indonesia closer together in our determination to eradicate the threat of violent extremism in the region and globally.

Today is an opportunity to remember those who suffered and died, and my thoughts are with all who continue to grieve for their loved ones. We also pay tribute to those who survived and who have courageously rebuilt their lives.

The Australian Consulate-General in Bali will honour today's anniversary of the 2002 Bali bombing by opening the Consulate-General's Memorial Garden for private reflection and remembrance.
