Australia supports Philippines after Typhoon Melor

  • Joint media release:

The Australian Government will support the ongoing efforts of the Philippines Government as it responds to Typhoon Melor and Tropical Depression Onyok and persistent heavy rains.

As a good friend and close neighbour in the Indo-Pacific region, the Australian Government has responded to the request for assistance from the Philippines Government, which has already mobilised considerable domestic resources to support affected communities.

Australia will provide up to $500,000 to support families affected by widespread and damaging flooding. Prepositioned supplies include 5,700 hygiene and safety kits, which will be distributed through the United Nations Population Fund as well as emergency shelter kits distributed through the Philippines Red Cross.

These kits include essential items such as blankets, mosquito nets, sleeping mats and water containers. They also include basic hygiene and safety items for women to reduce the threat of gender based violence.

Australia has also provided an Australian Civilian Corps specialist, who is working with the Philippines Government, to support disaster response logistics and humanitarian relief efforts.
