Australia to lead Green Climate Fund Board

  • Joint media release

Australia has been elected unanimously to lead the Green Climate Fund in 2016. The Green Climate Fund, which commenced in August 2012, is the world's leading fund for addressing climate change in developing countries including those in our region.

Australia is seen as a pragmatic, constructive and results focused member of the Green Climate Fund. As co-chair with South Africa, Australia will encourage an increased focus on the climate change challenges facing our region, particularly Pacific Island countries and other Small Island Developing States.

Australia's engagement with the Fund has been instrumental in delivering the first tranche of eight projects, totalling US$168 million. This includes:

  • an adaptation project in Fiji to take a climate-proof approach to urban water supply and wastewater management (US$31 million);
  • support for communities in the Maldives to manage climate change induced water shortages (US$23.6 million); and
  • climate-resilient local infrastructure in Bangladesh (US$40 million).

The Australian Government's $200 million commitment to the Green Climate Fund builds on our existing support for climate resilience projects in developing countries, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region. Australia currently has invested over $50 million in climate resilience related projects throughout the Pacific.
