Australia-Indonesia Institute Grants

Today I announce the recipients of nine new grants funded by the Australia-Indonesia Institute (AII). The AII Grants Program is designed to strengthen links between our two countries by supporting activities that bring different and innovative perspectives to how we engage with Indonesia.

Australia's partnership with Indonesia is vital to our economic, strategic and security interests. The nine projects funded will promote our partnership with Indonesia in areas including art and culture, education, and economic diplomacy.

Successful AII grant proposals include:

  • Balai Bahasa Indonesia in Perth will bring Michael Jakarimilena, a popular 'Indonesian Idol' runner-up, to perform and teach at secondary schools, providing a new and exciting way to learn about Indonesia language and culture;
  • Monash University's project 'Piloting the Ambulance Nurse Course in Indonesia' will educate nursing staff at Brawijaya University in Malang, East Java;
  • Flinders University's 'Jembatan Initiative' will increase students' understanding of Indonesian language and culture through interactive workshops in South Australian schools;
  • Indonesian artist FX Harsono will present multifaceted artworks at the 20th Sydney Biennale in 2016.

These projects will help build sustainable partnerships, and increase the knowledge and understanding of each other's cultures, values and traditions.

The AII was established by the Australian Government in 1989 and is a valuable component of the Australia-Indonesia bilateral relationship. Today's announcement builds on the 14 grant recipients announced in July 2015.
