Subject: Earthquake off the coast of Vanuatu

10 August 2010

STEPHEN SMITH: At about half past three Eastern Standard Time this afternoon there was a 7.5 Richter earthquake, about 40km off the coast of Port Villa in Vanuatu. The advice I have is that whilst there is some minor damage to buildings there is no great damage. We are checking to ensure that no Australians have been adversely affected by the earthquake. We know that all Australian staff and relatives and dependents are accounted for, but we’re just checking to ensure that no Australians have been adversely affected by the earthquake. There was no Pacific-wide tsunami warning so, whilst we will remain in close contact with Vanuatu officials, we are confident on the advice that we have that no Australians would have been adversely affected by the earthquake.
