I welcome the European Union decision overnight to impose tough sanctions on Iran to seek to bring Iran to brook on its nuclear program. I also welcome the fact that Canada has joined the European Union in announcing the full implementation of United Nations Security Council resolution 1929.

Australia will very carefully look at the detail of the European Union sanctions, both its implementation of the Security Council resolution and autonomous sanctions to see whether there is more that Australia can do in this area.

Finally can I welcome very much the decision of the Cambodian Extraordinary Chamber of the Cambodian Courts in the Duch decision, bringing to account for the first occasion one of the people responsible for the terrible atrocities under the Khmer Rouge regime.

Australia has supported Cambodia's return to democracy. We have supported financially the establishment and the maintenance of the Extraordinary Chamber and we welcome very much the decision yesterday.

The sentence itself may be subject to appeal so I won't be drawn on the sentencing but we welcome very much the first time the bringing to account of one of the principal architects of atrocities under the Khmer Rouge regime.
