Baghdad bombings

I condemn the 8 December terrorist bombings in Baghdad in the strongest possible terms and express Australia's condolences to the Government and people of Iraq.

Such cowardly and indiscriminate bombings are clearly designed to inflict maximum casualties on the civilian population of Baghdad.

At a time when Iraq's leaders are finalising arrangements for the 2010 national elections, the terrorists who carried out these acts are clearly trying to undermine the democratic process supported by the people of Iraq.

Australia supports the ongoing commitment of Iraq's leadership to national elections, and encourages the Iraqi people not to waver in their support for the democratic political process.
