Interview - Sichuan TV, China

JOURNALIST: The first question is we know it’s your first time to China, so why did you choose Chengdu as your destination?

STEPHEN SMITH: It’s the first time I’ve been to China as Australia’s Foreign Minister.  I’ve been to China before as a member of parliament to Beijing, to Shanghai and to Guangzhou.  I wanted to come to Sichuan to make the point that Australia sees China as being more than just Beijing and Shanghai.  I come from Western Australia.  So I know how important the west of the country is to the rest of the nation.  And there are lots of opportunities for Australian companies in Sichuan Province.  And of course, all Australians were touched by the terrible earthquake and we’re now engaged in the reconstruction work following from the earthquake.  So I’m very pleased to be in the West.  It sends a signal that Australia understands that China is more than just Beijing and Shanghai.

JOURNALIST: Ok, so you’ve already stayed in Chengdu for several hours.  What do you think about this beautiful city?

SMITH: I like it, it’s terrific.  And I’m going to see some more of it.  So I’ve been very pleased to go to the University.  I thought the University was a very nice campus, a very good environment for students to learn.  And of course, Sichuan University has a long and proud history as one of the oldest universities in China.  But I very much like the city and I’m looking forward to spending more time here.

JOURNALIST: Ok, thanks a lot, and enjoy your tour.

SMITH: Thanks very much.
