Pakistan
13 August 2010
The disaster in Pakistan continues to escalate, with flood levels rising in some northern districts.
This morning a C-17 Globemaster aircraft left Australia carrying supplies to Pakistan including tents, tarpaulins and plastic sheeting, and water purification equipment.
A second aircraft is scheduled to depart on Sunday carrying relief supplies.
This assistance provided jointly by Defence and AusAID is in addition to Australia's $10 million support to United Nations agencies, the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and Australian Non-Government Organisations.
Australian officials are in close contact with United Nations agencies and the Pakistan Government to assess what more can be done.
In the meantime, Australian Non-Government Organisations are calling for contributions from Australians to assist the people of Pakistan. I encourage people to give generously.
