Stephen Smith comment on Japan Prime Minister Kan apology

Japanese Prime Minister Kan's statement of 10 August expressing Japan's deep remorse and heartfelt apologies for damage and suffering resulting from its colonisation of South Korea from 1910 to 1945 is a welcome step that Australia hopes will help to ensure the continued development of stronger relations between Japan and South Korea - two of Australia's most important economic, security and strategic partners.
