Foreign Minister Bob Carr today congratulated 70 Lao students who have successfully obtained Laos-Australia National Scholarships at a ceremony in Vientiane.
Senator Carr attended the event with Laos Minister of Education and Sports, HE Dr Phankham Viphavanh.
Senator Carr said the 4-year scholarships, provided by the Australian Government, support students from remote and educationally disadvantaged districts of Laos to undertake bachelor degree study at the National University of Laos.
"With these scholarships, Australia is supporting the Lao Government's on-going commitment to develop the next generation of leaders whether in public or private enterprise," Senator Carr said.
"Education is at the heart of the Lao economy and Laos' future development.
"Education is also the flagship of the Australian aid program globally and here in Laos."
The Lao Australian National Scholarships program aims to support young men and women to obtain professional qualifications in areas that are a focus of the Australian aid program in Laos, including education, rural development, trade and natural resources management.
The program is also working with The National University of Laos to build their skills to manage and deliver scholarship programs and comprehensive student services.
This year marks the second year of the program with 70 students having already commenced their studies in 2012.
