Foreign Minister Bob Carr has welcomed yesterday's statement by the President of the United Nations Security Council strongly condemning North Korea's long-range missile launch on 13 April.

"The United Nations Security Council's robust response to the launch reflects the international community's very grave concerns about North Korea's nuclear and missile programs," Senator Carr said.

"The Security Council has made it clear that it will not tolerate a further launch or nuclear test by North Korea."

Senator Carr urged North Korea to act responsibly and engage constructively with the international community.

"North Korea needs to cease its provocations, abide by UN resolutions and implement its previous commitments to stop its nuclear and missile programs," he said.

Senator Carr emphasised the need for UN Member States to implement fully the sanctions imposed on North Korea under UNSC Resolutions 1718 and 1874.

"Australia will continue to implement fully its obligations under Resolutions 1718 and 1874 and will work actively in our region to encourage others to do so."
