Diplomatic appointment - Ambassador to Greece

Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd has today announced that Ms Jenny Bloomfield is to be Australia's new Ambassador to Greece with non-resident accreditation to Albania and Bulgaria.
Ms Bloomfield is expected to take up her appointment next month. She will replace Mr Jeremy Newman who has been Ambassador since March 2008.
Australia and Greece enjoy a close productive relationship founded on strong community, historical and international associations.
Greece is a valuable partner in ISAF's operations in Afghanistan, in the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) of which Australia became an Asian partner for cooperation in 2009 and in the Asia Europe Meeting of which Australia became a member in 2010.
Australia's partnership with Greece is an important part of our partnership with the European Union. Australia values Greece's active role in its region and its efforts to strengthen the strategic stability of the eastern Mediterranean and the wider Middle East.
Ms Bloomfield is a senior career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and until recently was Assistant Secretary, Middle East Branch, a position she held since February 2010. Ms Bloomfield has previously served overseas in Japan and Iran.
Ms Bloomfield holds a Master of Arts degree in Foreign Affairs and Trade from Monash University, a Bachelor of Letters in Political Science and French and a Bachelor of Laws (Honours)/Bachelor of Arts in Modern Greek from the University of Melbourne. Ms Bloomfield speaks Greek. She is married with four children.
