Australia welcomes fact finding Commission and National Dialogue in Bahrain
Media release
9 July 2011
Australia welcomes the decision of the Government of the Kingdom of Bahrain to establish an independent fact-finding Commission of Inquiry, to investigate reports of human rights violations during the unrest in Bahrain in February and March.
Together with the National Dialogue announced earlier this month, the establishment of the Commission is a positive development towards national reconciliation and accountability.
The Bahrain Government has undertaken to make the Commission's report public in its entirety. The international character of the Commission is another positive element.
"I welcome the Bahrain Government's decision that the Commission be accorded the full cooperation of all government agencies in conducting its investigations," said Mr Rudd.
"It is important that the Commission have unfettered access to people and information to ensure the integrity of its investigation."
"I also join others in the international community in welcoming the National Dialogue announced on 2 July. The Australian Government will continue to encourage all sides to commit to a process of reform through peaceful and inclusive dialogue."
Australia looks to the Government of Bahrain to maintain its commitment to achieve concrete political reform based on respect for the legitimate rights and aspirations of all its citizens.
