Unrest in The Middle East

Statement

Adelaide

18 February 2011

The recent violence and loss of life in Bahrain is a matter of deep concern to the Australian Government.

We urge all sides to avoid violence and exercise restraint. In particular, the Government calls upon the authorities in Bahrain to respect the right of their people to peaceful protest and freedom of expression. All efforts must be made to avoid further loss of life and injury.

We recognise steps taken by Bahrain on political and economic reforms. Further progress is needed in meeting the legitimate aspirations of Bahrainis for political, economic and social opportunities and reform. Dialogue, both between the people and Government of Bahrain, as well as between Bahrain's different community groups, will be critical in helping Bahrain move forward and return to stability.

The world's eyes are on the Middle East.

Protests are spreading to a wider range of countries in the region. The Government is concerned by recent reports of escalating violence and loss of life in Libya, and in Iran and Iraq. Unrest is Yemen and in Algeria is ongoing.

It is the responsibility of the governments of these countries to allow peaceful protest. Dialogue is the best solution to calls for reform by a country's people.

The welfare of Australian citizens in the Middle East and North Africa is the Australian Government's utmost priority.

We are closely monitoring developments and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has its travel advisories under constant review. Australian citizens in the region should register their presence with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and regularly check the Department's Travel Advice.
