Japan announces new sanctions against Iran
3 September 2010
I welcome today’s announcement by Japan of further sanctions against Iran.
Japan’s announcement of new sanctions, including measures targeting Iran’s banking and energy sectors, demonstrates its continued strong commitment to nuclear disarmament and nuclear non-proliferation and reinforces United Nations Security Council Resolution 1929 of 9 June.
Japan’s new measures follow the package of Australian sanctions measures I announced on 29 July, and those announced by the European Union Foreign Affairs Council on 26 July.
These steps demonstrate the strong commitment of the international community to have Iran meet its international obligations in respect of its nuclear program.
Australia continues to urge Iran to comply with all relevant UN Security Council resolutions and cooperate fully with the International Atomic Energy Agency.
