25 June 2010

Today I announce the appointment of Dr Stephen Sherlock as the new Director of the Centre for Democratic Institutions at the Australian National University.

The Centre was established by the Australian Government in 1998 to help strengthen democratic systems of government in our region. It is particularly focused on countries in the Asia Pacific region, such as Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Fiji, Timor-Leste and Vanuatu.

Training courses and research at the Centre concentrate on parliamentary leadership, the operation of political parties, reform of democratic institutions and representation of women.

Dr Sherlock holds a doctorate in South Asian History and Politics from the University of Sydney, and has extensive experience in political governance and accountability.

Dr Sherlock has previously worked for the Australian agency for International Development (AusAID), the United Nations Development Programme and the World Bank. He has also worked extensively across the Asia-Pacific region.

AusAID provides around $1 million per year to support the Centre's operation.
