Visit to Perth by Singapore's Foreign Minister George Yeo

Media release

19 June 2010

Singapore's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr George Yeo, visited Perth on Friday 18 and Saturday 19 June as a Guest of the Australian Government.

This followed our meeting in Canberra on Wednesday 16 June.

In Perth Mr Yeo also met with Premier Colin Barnett.

Yesterday, Mr Yeo and I visited Curtin University, which has established a campus in Singapore. It was an opportunity to learn about Curtin's leading role in scientific and industrial research in Western Australia and internationally.

Mr Yeo and I also met a number of Singaporean students at Curtin University.

Last year, nearly 10,000 Singaporeans were enrolled in Australian educational institutions. This helps strengthen the long-standing people-to-people links between Australia and Singapore.

This morning Mr Yeo, Premier Barnett and I laid wreaths at the State War Memorial, in recognition of Australia and Singapore's shared wartime history.

Australia greatly values its comprehensive relationship with Singapore, which not only draws on historical ties but spans contemporary strategic and economic interests in the Asia-Pacific region and more widely.

The Singapore-Australia Joint Ministerial Commission (SAJMC), the bilateral meeting of Foreign, Defence and Trade Ministers from both countries, is a measure of the breadth of the relationship.

I look forward to hosting the SAJMC in Australia next year.
