19 May 2009Australia Leading the Region’s Fight Against H1N1 Influenza 09
Australia will provide $3 million to the World Health Organisation (WHO) to fight H1N1 Influenza 09 (Human Swine Influenza).
The funds will be used to improve detection, surveillance and emergency preparedness in developing countries, particularly in our own region.
These efforts will also support Australia’s strong domestic response.
Australia’s contribution includes $1.5 million to assist Asia Pacific countries strengthen their capacity to respond to pandemic outbreaks and $1.5 million to support WHO’s Global Pandemic Response Plan.
In 2006, Australia committed $100 million over four years to help the region detect, prevent and respond to pandemics and other emerging infectious diseases.
This support has done much to boost the ability of countries in the region to respond to the current outbreak.
However as countries review their preparedness to meet the challenges posed by H1N1 Influenza 09, further work is required.
Australia is closely monitoring regional and international developments and is supporting WHO to assess country responses and identify possible future needs.
WHO is the lead health technical agency and best placed to assess country needs and coordinate assistance.
