Australia and Republic of Korea Sign Memorandum of Understanding on Development Cooperation

Today I signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Development Cooperation with the Republic of Korea Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, His Excellency Mr Yu Myung-hwan.

The Memorandum reflects the depth of the Australia-Korea relationship and commits our two countries to better cooperation on international development assistance efforts.

It will provide the framework for greater cooperation on development assistance.

Examples of likely cooperation include engaging on development aspects of the G20 agenda, particularly while the Republic of Korea chairs the G20 during 2010, and strengthening cooperation in disaster and emergency preparedness, response and management.

Today’s signing recognises the Republic of Korea as an important emerging donor and development partner in Asia.

The Memorandum is an outcome of the commitment made by Prime Minister Rudd and President of the Republic of Korea His Excellency Mr LeeMyung-bak to enhance Australia-Korea security cooperation, as expressed in the Joint Statement on Enhanced Global and Security Cooperation.
