Australia to help victims of Tropical Storm Ondoy
Australia will provide up to $1 million to support response and recovery activities in the wake of Tropical Storm ‘Ondoy’ (Ketsana) which hit the island of Luzon in the Philippines on 26 September.
Australia extends its condolences to the communities affected by this disaster.
Australia’s contribution will help with relief operations, including emergency supplies of drinking water, clothing, hygiene kits and related essential items delivered through agencies on-the-ground, including the Philippines National Red Cross.
‘Ondoy’ struck Baler, Quezon province causing widespread damage, including in nearby Manila.
The storm has caused the worst flooding in the country in over four decades, with 100 deaths reported to date and over 400,000 people affected, mostly in Metro Manila and surrounding provinces in southern Luzon.
Widespread damage to infrastructure through flooding and mudslides is expected to exacerbate the disaster’s impact. Landslides have already buried hundreds of homes in Pampanga, north-west of Manila.
Australia stands ready to offer further assistance if additional needs are identified by the Philippines Government. A joint needs assessment is currently being undertaken by the Philippines National Disaster Coordination Centre and United Nations agencies.
