Bombing in Pakistan
The Australian Government condemns in the strongest possible terms the cowardly suicide bomb attack on the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad on 20 September which has reportedly killed at least 60 people and injured scores of others. Our condolences and thoughts extend to the victims of the attack and their families.
This vicious attack on innocent people is another reminder of the grave terrorist threat which is threatening democracy and security in Pakistan. This threat cannot be allowed to succeed.
President Zardari has declared his determination to continue the fight against terrorism. It is now more important than ever that other countries step forward to work with Pakistan to combat the terrorists resolutely and effectively.
Australia stands with Pakistan and its democratically elected government in the fight to defeat this scourge. The Australian Government is now considering how it can expand its own efforts to assist Pakistan in concrete ways in its fight against terrorism, including in the possible provision of law enforcement assistance, counter-insurgency training and technical assistance.
There are no reports at this time of any Australians being affected by the Marriott bomb blast. The Australian High Commission is continuing to liaise with the Pakistani authorities to confirm whether any Australians were involved.
Australia is making a significant contribution to addressing global challenges and is determined to ensure the United Nations can and will play a central role in meeting these challenges.
