Death of Zambian President Mwanawasa
The Australian Government is saddened by news of the death overnight of Zambian President Patrick Levy Mwanawasa, and conveys its deepest sympathy and condolences to the Government and people of Zambia and to the late President’s family.
President Mwanawasa was a strong advocate of democracy and a committed fighter for better governance, both in Zambia and in Africa more widely.
He took a principled stand on the crisis in Zimbabwe and was a strong voice calling for restoration of democratic rule and good government. He was very critical of the violence surrounding the Zimbabwe elections earlier this year.
I have spoken to my Zambian counterpart, Foreign Minister Pande twice this year to discuss our mutual concerns about the situation in Zimbabwe and how to find a resolution of the crisis there.
Australia and Zambia enjoy an increasingly close and friendly relationship, underpinned by common outlooks on democracy and governance, and our joint membership of the Commonwealth.
These foundations are bolstered by growing Australian mining investment in Zambia and Australian assistance in training for the Zambian public sector.
I am confident the people of Zambia will build on President Mwanawasa’s legacy as one of Africa's most admired leaders.
