Australia Welcomes Agreement on Lebanon
Australia welcomes the agreement reached by Lebanese leaders yesterday in Doha.
The agreement represents a step by Lebanese leaders away from violence and towards a peaceful resolution of the political crisis.
The agreement calls for the immediate election of a President, the formation of a new national unity government and the adoption of a law permitting 2009 elections.
Australia commends the efforts of the Arab League in bringing the parties together for talks.
Australia has long supported the sovereignty, political independence, and unity of the Lebanese state.
The Australian Government renews its support for the democratically elected Government of Prime Minister Siniora and continues to urge the implementation of UN Security Council resolutions which call for the disarmament of all Lebanese militias and for the Government of Lebanon to extend its control over all Lebanese territory.
