The Hon Stephen Smith MP
AUSTRALIAN MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS

Media release

26 April 2008

Dialogue on Tibet welcome

The Australian Government welcomes reports that China has agreed to initiate contact and consultations with the Dalai Lama’s representatives.

This appears to be a welcome move towards recommencement of dialogue between the Chinese Government and representatives of the Dalai Lama.

Any process of dialogue will be complex and will likely be characterised by many ups and downs. But given recent developments it is important that this process begin.

The Prime Minister and I have consistently called for such dialogue. Most recently the Prime Minister did so during his visit to China.

The Australian Government believes that it is only through dialogue that the problems of Tibet can be resolved. I encourage both sides to make the best use of this opportunity.
