AUSTRALIAN MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS

Media release

3 March 2008

Situation in Gaza and southern Israel

I am deeply concerned at the escalation of violence in Gaza and southern Israel, which is causing loss of life and injury among civilian populations on both sides and undermines the peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.

Israel, like every other state, has a basic right to self-defence. The continued rocket attacks by Hamas from Gaza into Israel are terrorist acts which seek only to perpetuate violence and suffering.   They should cease immediately.

At the same time, Australia is very concerned by the humanitarian situation in Gaza resulting from the escalated tensions and violence and by the suffering this causes the people of Gaza. Every effort should be made to avoid the suffering of innocent civilians.

Australia urges all parties to heed the call of the UN Secretary-General to act with restraint, take steps to break the cycle of violence and to re-dedicate their commitment to the peace negotiations.

In this respect I am very concerned at the news that the Palestinian Authority has decided to halt negotiations with Israel. These negotiations remain the most effective way to achieve the shared objective that Israel and the Palestinian Authority set for themselves at Annapolis of an agreement by the end of 2008.
