Diplomatic Appointment: Consul-General in Chicago
I have confirmed the appointment of Ms Libby Schick as Australia’s new Consul-General of Australia in Chicago, USA. Ms Schick will succeed Mr Bob Charles who has been Consul-General since March 2005. She is expected to take up her appointment in March 2008.
The Australian Consulate General in Chicago supports Australian business in identifying and developing trade and investment opportunities and is active in expanding economic ties in the important Midwest region of the United States.
The work of the Consulate-General forges links with a wide range of decision-makers and enhances Australia's profile in a region that generates seventeen percent of the United States’ gross domestic product. It also has an important role in broadening American understanding of contemporary Australia, including as a sophisticated trade and investment partner, through its public diplomacy and outreach program. The post provides consular and passport services to Australian travellers and expatriates throughout the 11 Midwest states for which it is responsible.
Ms Schick is currently Assistant Secretary, International Organisations Branch, a position she has held since September 2006. Overseas, Ms Schick has served as Ambassador in Santiago de Chile (2001-05) and Deputy Head of Mission in Vienna (1990-94).
In Canberra, Ms Schick has held a range of senior positions including as Assistant Secretary, Americas Branch and later United States Branch from January to September 2006, Market Access Facilitator (Automotive) (1999-2001), Assistant Secretary, Nuclear Policy Branch (1998-99) and Director, Regional Economic Issues Section, including APEC (1994-97).
Ms Schick holds a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) degree from the University of Queensland and she is married with three daughters.
