Australia welcomes Cambodian Counter-Terrorism law

Attorney-General Philip Ruddock and Foreign Minister Alexander Downer have today welcomed news that the Cambodian Parliament has passed its Law on Counter-Terrorism.

“This is an important step for Cambodia and the region in the fight against terrorism,” said Mr Ruddock.

“The law will provide a comprehensive legislative basis for counter-terrorism efforts in Cambodia.”

The Law on Counter-Terrorism was drafted with the assistance of the Australian Government, which provided advice to the Cambodian officials and legislators.

“Australia’s assistance on this project demonstrates Australia’s strong commitment to supporting regional security and the implementation of United Nations instruments,” said Mr Downer.

“It complements the extensive and broad-based counter-terrorism assistance Australia is delivering to partners in South-East Asia.”

Cambodia’s Senate approved the Law on Counter‑Terrorism on 10 July 2007, after it passed through Cambodia’s National Assembly on 26 June 2007.

The Law will now be provided to the King for his approval before coming into force.
