Assassination of Benazir Bhutto
Last night, from the south-west of Western Australia, I telephoned Pakistan's Foreign Minister, Mr Inam ul Haque, to express the Australian Government and the Australian people's deepest sympathy to the Government and people of Pakistan following the murder of Benazir Bhutto and others killed in the appalling act of terrorism in Rawalpindi.
In my conversation with Mr ul Haque, I condemned this act of political violence in the strongest terms. On behalf of the Australian Government, I urged all parties to exercise restraint at a moment of great and grave difficulty for Pakistan.
I conveyed the Australian Government's view that democracy and the rule of law are essential prerequisites for achieving peace and stability in Pakistan, and the strongest basis for combating extremism.
I told Mr ul Haque that Australia strongly supports a return to democratic processes in Pakistan, and the holding of elections at the earliest possible opportunity under conditions allowing for full and safe participation.
Mr ul Haque expressed the appreciation of the Pakistan Government and the people of Pakistan for Australia's support and sympathy at this difficult time for Pakistan.
