Signing of the Treaty between Australia and Thailand on Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters
Australia and Thailand have today signed the Treaty on Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters.
The Treaty was signed by Australia's Foreign Minister, the Hon Alexander Downer MP, and the Thai Foreign Minister, HE Dr Kantathi Suphamongkon, during the ASEAN Post Ministerial Conferences and the ASEAN Regional Forum meetings held in Kuala Lumpur.
The Treaty will enable Australia and Thailand to assist each other in the investigation and prosecution of serious crimes including terrorism, drug trafficking, fraud, money laundering and people trafficking.
The Treaty on mutual assistance in criminal matters will also allow law enforcement agencies to effectively obtain information and evidence needed for the investigation or prosecution of serious crimes.
A strong cooperative relationship with Thailand is a key element in the fight against transnational crime in our region.
