Dutch Parliament Endorses Military Deployment to Afghanistan
I welcome the strong support of the Dutch Parliament for deploying a Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) to Oruzgan Province in Afghanistan. This would form part of NATO's International Security Assistance Force Stage III operations in Afghanistan.
I understand that following the Dutch Parliament's overwhelming vote in favour of deploying a PRT, the Dutch Cabinet will now make a final decision, possibly later today Netherlands time.
It is important for all of us to work together on this important task. Australia has previously demonstrated its commitment to Afghanistan, including by deploying our Special Forces and helicopters to the country. Australia has also disbursed $110 million since 2001 to assist reconstruction and developments in Afghanistan. At the London Conference on Afghanistan a few days ago I announced an additional $55 million in aid through to June 2007, which is part of an indicative $150 million Australia has committed over the next five years.
The Government is considering options to contribute to a PRT but has not yet made a final decision. However, the Dutch decision will be a significant and positive factor in our consideration. Should Australia contribute to a PRT it is likely to comprise around 200 personnel and deploy possibly later this year.
