Security Situation in Aceh, Indonesia

My department has today reissued its travel advice for Indonesia to draw attention to new information received by the Government concerning possible terrorist planning for attacks against foreigners involved in relief efforts in Aceh or other areas of northern Sumatra.

The Government is working closely with Indonesian authorities and other governments involved in the relief effort to address this new threat information.

The travel advice for Indonesia has for some time recommended Australians avoid all travel to Aceh. Following the Boxing Day tsunamis Australians were advised not to travel to Banda Aceh or other parts of Aceh to participate in humanitarian relief efforts unless under the auspices of a recognised aid organisation with a security plan approved by Indonesian authorities to ensure the safety and security of its personnel.

In view of this new terrorist threat information, Australians in northern Sumatra should ensure that they have a robust security plan in place. We advise Australians not associated with recognised aid organisations and who are not covered by an approved security plan to depart in the interests of their own safety.

The Australian Embassy in Jakarta will shortly be briefing Australian organisations and individuals involved in the relief effort about this development.

The Government is keeping the security situation in Aceh under close review and new information will be brought to the attention of the public through my department's travel advice.
