FA009 - 14 January 2005
Visit to the United States
I will visit Los Angeles from 15-20 January to attend Australia Week 2005, a promotion showcasing Australian exports, culture and way of life. Inaugurated in 2004 and sponsored by the Government and the private sector, this event aims to raise Australia's profile on America's West Coast and reinforce our strong business presence in California.
During my visit, I will promote trade and investment opportunities flowing from the January 1 entry into force of the Australia-US Free Trade Agreement. I will also promote Australia's competitiveness as a potential supplier of LNG to California, speak at Australia Week's trade and investment seminar and attend the Forbes CEO Dinner.
Following the meeting between Prime Minister Howard and Californian Governor Schwarzenegger in 2004, I will meet the Lieutenant Governor of California, Cruz M. Bustamante. With a population of more than 35 million, California is a globally significant economy and is prominent in Australia's trade and investment relationship with the United States.
On 16 January I will take part in a church service in Los Angeles which will commemorate Australia's National Day of Mourning.
On 19 January I will address the prestigious Los Angeles World Affairs Council. This will provide me with an opportunity to respond to the UN Secretary-General's report on High-Level Panel on Threats, Challenges and Change, launched on 2 December. This and other speaking opportunities will also allow me to highlight Australia's major role in the global response to the tsunami crisis.
