Australia Strengthens Military Presence in Solomon Islands
Following the tragic death of Adam Dunning, an Australian Federal Police Protective Service Officer serving with the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI ), the Government has authorised the immediate redeployment of an ADF rapid response capability out of Townsville. An infantry company out of the 2nd Royal Australian Regiment will commence its redeployment tomorrow, 23 December.
This redeployment underscores the Government's determination not to be intimidated and demonstrates its commitment to completing RAMSI's mission in Solomon Islands. The Prime Minister of Solomon Islands has been informed of this decision and fully supports it.
Australia will not allow Adam Dunning's callous murder to derail the significant progress which has already been made by RAMSI. Australia remains determined to ensure that the improvements that have taken place in law and order in the Solomon Islands remain. We will take all necessary precautions to protect Australian and other RAMSI personnel.
This strengthened military presence will support police in carrying out their work to complete the restoration of law and order in Solomon Islands.
The Government was shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the fatal shooting this morning of Adam Dunning. Adam was a 26 year old from Canberra, and he had previously served as a member of the Australian Defence Forces (ADF) in East Timor. He was an exemplary officer who served his country with great distinction. The thoughts of the Australian Government and people go out to the Dunning family, the Australian policing community and RAMSI for their loss.
