International Conference on Afghanistan
I will attend a major international conference on Afghanistan in Berlin on 31 March and 1 April.
The conference will examine progress so far in the reconstruction of Afghanistan following a ruinous generation of conflict. The conference will also consider the challenges that lie ahead as the people of Afghanistan strive, with the assistance of the international community, to build a democratic state based on the rule of law, and a modern economy.
I will also take the opportunity to meet with some of my counterparts to discuss progress in the war against terrorism and our ongoing commitment to the rehabilitation of Iraq. The March 11 bombings in Madrid highlight how important it is to maintain and strengthen international resolve and cooperation in the face of terrorism.
Australia continues to make a substantial commitment to the process of transformation in Afghanistan. Australian forces played an important role in the campaign which led to the overthrow of the Taliban. At the same time, Afghanistan represents one of the Australian Government’s largest ever humanitarian contributions – around $85 million since late 2001.
Importantly, Afghanistan is no longer a safe haven for terrorists. However, it continues to face enormous challenges, in the areas of security, health, education and economic, social and institutional development. Australia will continue to provide a substantial level of support to Afghanistan.
The Afghanistan conference is being co-chaired by the governments of Germany, Afghanistan, Japan and the United Nations. Around 60 countries are expected to be present including upwards of 25 Foreign Ministers.
