Australia Will Not Be Intimidated in the Fight Against Terrorism
The comments made by Abu Bakar Bashir broadcast on Channel 7 tonight (17 March) speak for themselves. They are further evidence of his dangerous fanaticism in seeking to inspire and justify acts of terrorism.
Bashir, the spiritual leader of Jema'ah Islamiyah, is implicitly calling for the destruction of our country. He and his supporters peddle an uncompromising ideology of hate that is contrary to the basic teachings of Islam.
Those who are intimidated by this and think that by changing our foreign policy we can somehow protect ourselves from attack are wrong.
Terrorists have killed indiscriminately in Spain, Indonesia, Pakistan, the United States, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Morocco and other countries with governments of varying political persuasions and religious backgrounds.
The Australian Government and all those committed to democracy, freedom and individual rights, will not and cannot be intimidated.
