Solomon Islands Success Enables Military Reduction

The decision to implement the first reduction of the military component in the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI) underscores the success of the mission so far.

A review of the current security environment in Solomon Islands shows that significant advances have been made in stabilising law and order and bringing to an end the intimidation and violence that has plagued the lives of ordinary Solomon Islanders over the past three years.

Over 3,700 weapons have been surrendered and 15 police posts have been established throughout the country. RAMSI has arrested several high-profile ex-militants, including Harold Keke and Jimmy ‘Rasta’ Lusibea.

RAMSI is a police-led operation. The Government said from the outset that it would reduce the military element as soon as circumstances permitted.

The decision to reduce the military component was made in consultation with Australia’s regional partners and the Solomon Islands Government.

The improvement in law and order is testament to the dedication and professionalism of the police and military contingents working together.

The men and women from the Australian Federal Police and the Australian Protective Service, working closely with the Australian Defence Force, have played an important role in restoring life to normality in the Solomon Islands.

This could not have been achieved without the major contribution made by New Zealand and the other Pacific Islands participating nations.

Details of the initial drawdown will be announced by the Minister for Defence, Senator Hill. Any further adjustment in the size of the military component is dependent on continued progress.
